Maxine Feldman
As a mixed media artist, my work is rooted in the interplay of diverse materials, textures, and emotions. Through the freedom that mixed media offers, I incorporate printmaking, mark-making, painting, textiles, and found objects—cutting, layering, and re-arranging elements to form new visual narratives.
Although my compositions are abstract, they invite close inspection. Within the layers, viewers often discover subtle stories, and unexpected connections between colors and patterns. My intention is to encourage a quiet, immersive experience — one that allows each viewer to find their own meaning through the materials and arrangements I carefully assemble. My approach is informed by the quote: “It always pays to dwell slowly on the beautiful things—and the more beautiful, the more slowly.” This proposal is inspired by that ethos: to present a collection of works that embody a sense of slowness, attention, and beauty in transformation.
I have been both an active artist and an educator for over 40 years. Teaching has enriched my appreciation for process, experimentation, and lifelong learning. I find joy and wonder in the creative journey, even without having all the answers, and I cultivate a space where my students can experience this same delight.
In the summer of 2023, I was honored to be an Artist in Residence at Constellation Studios in Lincoln, Nebraska, where I studied under master printmaker Karen Kunc. Through this residency, I expanded my practice by exploring new printmaking and papermaking techniques. I returned to my studio with a collection of pieces —what I call “gems”—waiting the perfect context in which to shine.
My current work includes clay monoprinting and mixed media collage. While my materials and techniques have evolved over the years, a consistent visual language has emerged—one that weaves color, texture, and form into cohesive and expressive compositions. Each summer, I continue to take workshops to deepen my practice and renew my energy and vision.
